Police suspect bicycle chop shop in North Seattle storage locker

Seattle police are investigating a man suspected of collecting stolen bicycles in a Lake City storage facility and selling them on Craigslist.

The man, who is not being named because he hasn't been charged, has a lengthy criminal history including arrests for burglary and bicycle theft, according to court documents. He recently pleaded guilty to an expedited felony charge of second-degree possession of stolen property stemming from an unrelated case involving a bike worth $1,400, court records show.

Investigators say at least one of the bikes found at the man's Lake City Public Storage unit was stolen from Gas Works Park in December.

Shortly after midnight March 16, utility workers on the roof of the storage facility noticed what they described to police as a handful of people stripping bicycles in the vehicle bay. The group was moving dozens of bicycles, they said.

Police stopped three men. The man with the lengthy criminal history, 45, said he owned the bicycles being moved in the storage facility elevator. The man said he'd bought them on Craigslist, had checked their serial numbers and planned to resell them on the Web site. He offered to let officers check serial numbers of bikes in his unit.

When officers got to the roughly 10-by-10-foot unit, they found it "stacked floor-to-ceiling with disassembled bicycles (frames, wheels, accessories) and recognized them as mostly high-value and some specialized bikes," North Precinct Detective Dain Jones wrote in an affidavit used to obtain a search warrant. "The bikes and parts were stacked in jumbles without any reasonable effort at organization or for concern of damage; they were literally piled in heaps against each other."

Police said it was also obvious that the man and his girlfriend, 26, were living in the unit. The woman was asleep there when officers arrived.

"Moreover, they found people obviously living inside other nearby storage units and heard snoring coming from others," Jones wrote. "Some of those 'occupants' even had space heaters hooked up to extension cords, creating a substantial risk of fire."

Jones reported that the officers didn't do a close search of the unit initially, but examined the bikes in the common-area elevator and found the one reported stolen from Gas Works Park. The man suspected of stealing it told police he was surprised because he'd checked the serial number, according to court documents.

The man with the extensive criminal record was arrested for possession of stolen property, but released the following evening. The others at the scene were indentified and released.

Police found the man's phone number linked to several Craigslist posts for a seller of "Road Bikes Galore!!!!!!!!!!!"

During a March 16 search of the locker, police seized 14 bicycles, 20 bike frames and 42 bike wheels. The investigation continues and has not been referred to the King County Prosecutor's Office.

EASTSOUND, Orcas Island — A steady stream of police cars with flashing lights were seen Thursday morning racing to the ferry dock in Anacortes to catch an early boat to Orcas Island.

The police were headed to join the latest effort to nab Colton Harris-Moore, the elusive fugitive from Camano Island who has managed to slip away from police time after time.

He's been on the run for nearly two years, and by late afternoon Thursday, he appeared again to be winning the cat-and-mouse game he's playing with law enforcement.

Police would not say what prompted the latest action. The intensive multi-agency manhunt kicked off around 1:15 a.m. and included officials from Snohomish County.

Police on Orcas believe Harris-Moore has been hiding out there since Feb. 10 when a small stolen plane landed in the mud.

Thursday, as the hours ticked by without an arrest, hope of ending the 6-foot-5 teen's time on the lam diminished, San Juan County Sheriff Bill Cumming said.

The search was scaled back by 3 p.m., he said.

“The assets involved in this search will remain close at hand and will be redeployed if the situation warrants,” the sheriff said.

He said 35 police worked the woods Thursday in an all-out push focused on the northwest corner of Turtleback Mountain, the iconic ridgeline that defines the western half of Orcas Island.

Harris-Moore was “believed to be in a very isolated and very rugged area on the west side of the island where only a few homes are located,” Cumming said.

A Snohomish County sheriff's police-dog team and two five-man teams of mantrackers from the Marysville Police Department joined FBI agents and other law enforcement agencies under the direction of the San Juan County Sheriff's Office. A U.S. Customs helicopter searched the area from above, including the mostly uninhabited western bluffs.

“We're out there, and we're active,” Marysville Police Chief Rick Smith said of his team.

Police in camouflage uniforms could be seen going door-to-door to check homes. Other police were seen coming and going from a narrow road with access to what were described as remote vacation properties.

The area is not far from where police suspect Harris-Moore, who turns 19 on Monday, was last believed to be operating.

He's suspected in an attempted burglary at a hardware store in the town of Eastsound on Feb. 28.

On Feb. 10 a plane was stolen from Anacortes and landed off the runway at the Orcas Island airport, about a mile outside town. Hours later, someone broke into an organic grocery store stealing food and vandalizing the security system.

The burglar drew several large footprints with chalk on the store's floor, an apparent reference to the “Barefoot Burglar,” the name some media have used to describe Harris-Moore. He's believed to sometimes commit crimes and run barefoot from the scene, although police say he most often wears shoes.

The crimes in Eastsound led officials to openly speculate about Harris-Moore's possible involvement.

Harris-Moore has been on the run since April 2008, when he escaped a halfway house in Renton where he was serving a three-year sentence for burglaries on Camano Island. Since then, he's suspected of stealing four private planes, two boats and luxury cars. He's also been linked to break-ins at homes and businesses in Washington, Idaho and British Columbia.

If Harris-Moore is responsible for all of the crimes he's been connected to, the total value of property involved exceeds $1.5 million.

The young felon has a following on the Internet and has drawn considerable media attention. The men's magazine Maxim has a feature story on him in its April issue.

"OK, here's the deal. I just picked up a new track bike and have no need for my old one. It's not the best bike on earth, but it's far from the worst and would make for a perfect starter racebike for Marymoor Park Velodrome events this summer. I'm not looking to get a bunch of money for the thing. But I also have no desire to hand this bike over to some trendy, skinny jean wearing, PBR drinking, ironic trucker hat wearing, eyelined and pierced hipster who will bastardize this fine bicycle by skidding it around the streets in a flurry of critical-mass-wannabe-rebel-neo-emo-poseur fixie nonsense. This bike was built with one goal in mind: to be raced on a velodrome. Not as a fashion accessory. Grow up, get a job, and buy a bike with (gasp!) brakes and gears for riding on the street.

That said, I'll let this bike go for ONE DOLLAR (that's right, $1) to the first person who claims it AND can show me reasonable proof that they intend to ride it on a velodrome. "National law enforcement experts say to catch a nimble fugitive like Colton Harris-Moore, police need dedicated teams that can pounce swiftly and move easily across jurisdictional borders.

The outfit best suited to the task — the FBI — doesn’t consider the 18-year-old Camano Island serial burglar a grave threat.

“He’s basically a local burglar, a local misguided kid,” FBI Special Agent Fred Gutt said. “It makes for a good read but it’s not viewed as a high-priority item for us.”

Harris-Moore is suspected of stealing four small planes and crashing each one. The cost of the property he’s believed to have stolen exceeds $1.5 million.

Most recently, Harris-Moore is suspected of stealing a $650,000 private plane from Anacortes on Feb. 10. The plane was recovered in the mud the next morning on Orcas Island. Deputies there also investigated a burglary at an Eastsound organic grocery store."

Stolen plane, chalk-drawn feet: Teen burglar back?

SEATTLE (AP) - A stolen airplane found in the San Juan Islands and chalk-outline feet drawn all over a burgled grocery store suggest that Washington's infamous teenage "barefoot burglar" is back at it.

Sherri Pierson, a bookkeeper at Homegrown Market on Orcas Island, told The Associated Press someone broke into the store Wednesday night, and its owner arrived Thursday to find large chalk-outline feet drawn all over the floor. Cash was taken _ Pierson wouldn't say how much _ and a security system monitor was left in a sink with water running over it.

Two of the footprints were leading out the door, next to a chalk-scrawled message: "C-YA!" Pierson said that if the perpetrator wasn't Harris-Moore, who is suspected in a spate of burglaries in the same neighborhood last fall, it was clearly someone impersonating him.

"We use chalk on our deli board, and he apparently saw the chalk on the fish counter," Pierson said. "He took everything out of our dessert case. We had a whole tray of raw croissants with fillings."

San Juan County sheriff's officials are also investigating a plane from Skagit County that was left at the airport on Orcas Island on Wednesday or Thursday.

Last fall, after a stolen small plane crash-landed at the airport, Harris-Moore was caught on surveillance video breaking into a grocery store. A hardware store, bar, coffee-shop and bank were also hit at that time.

I had the opportunity to check out Part 1 of this four part film festival series last weekend. The Sunday afternoon screening of "OUTSOURCED" a romantic comedy set in India, was an amusing first feature-length effort by director John Jeffcoat. John, who was on hand for Q&A afterwards, was charming as he shared anecdotes of his travels and the challenges of shooting in India. Adding to the experience was the amazing spread of Indian cuisine laid out by chef P.R... popping samosas and dipping fritters into housemade chutneys sure beats popcorn (although there was plenty of truffle-popcorn as well). The event went off seamlessly in the capable hands of MC J.B. and I'm looking forward to the next installment of "Sunlamp".

I've been following this story for a while now, and Outdoor Magazine has a full length feature story appearing in this months issue. This is the most comprehensive account of the Barefoot Burglars exploits I've seen to date and I recommend checking it out.

San Juan Islands-

"His name is Colt, carrying the gunslinging resonance of the Wild West. He's escaped a jail (albeit a baby jail) and evaded several sheriffs, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and even the FBI for 20 months. He's underdogging it alone in the Northwest wilderness, yet he's followed by bloggers and Facebookers worldwide, the modern equivalent of yesteryear's sensationalized dime-novel hero. This shit went down right outside my window. Heres the story..

"SEATTLE - A man in his 30s suffered a gunshot wound to the chest in a shooting in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood.

The man was walking along in the 700 block of East Union Street when he was shot just before 6 p.m. Friday.

"I heard a bang, and then a pause, and bang, bang, bang," said Matt Irvin, who was outside his apartment at Boylston and East Union when the shots rang out.

Irvin says he saw a man stumbling and ran to his side.

"I told the man to lay down and I could see he had a dime-size bullet hole in his chest, so I tried to keep him calm," he continued.

Other passersby stopped to help until police and medics arrived.

Seattle Police spokesman, Jeff Kappel, says the man was shot at least once in the chest.

The suspect was seen speeding away in a dark sedan.

While there is no official motive for the crime, Irvin says the victim said it was a robbery.

"He said they wanted my watch," said Irvin. "And I looked at the watch on his arm and it was a cheap watch."

The victim was taken to Harborview Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

The suspect is still at large."

I've been following this story for a while now, it's so theatrically interesting..

In the darkness of this sleepy island town, the beam of a deputy's flashlight caught the back of a lanky teenager wanted in a notorious 18-month burglary spree.

The teen glanced over his shoulder - and vanished into the woods. "He virtually vaporized in front of me," deputy Jeff Patterson recalled.

Such encounters have become all too common on the bucolic islands north of Seattle as police hunt for an elusive thief whose crime spree is quickly becoming a local legend. Colton Harris-Moore is suspected in about 50 burglary cases since he slipped away from a halfway house in April 2008.

From the smell inside I knew this wasn't just any viet-sam strip mall pho joint.

The ecstasy-like dreamy smiles on local viet families and vegan's alike told me I was in the right place.

Many of us pass you daily on theFlats. Only worth mentioning because I met some badass flats locals who not only work here but also give me food, +1.

Its been sitting in an alley on theFlats for as long as I can remember. Someone has been kind enough to steal everything off it except the saddle. The frame is actually really decent.

And why is there popcorn all around it? Bonus points to anyone who can identify which alley the bike is in.

More cyclist's caught up in violence. This comes from a tipster in NYC. See the clip here. A bit excessive unless that dude called the cyclists sister a "cunt". We don't really get the whole story from this clip, but the theFlats generally has a don't beat pedestrians with a U-LOCK policy.

Another report of motorist and biker violence coming to the attention of theFlats thanks to a tipster at the stranger.

Here's the gist: 'As the cyclist pedaled through the intersection, the Cadillac again pulled up next to him. The driver then got out, walked up to the cyclist, and punched him in the face, sending his helmet flying, cutting his lip and damaging his teeth.'
